“Laura, les ombres de l’été” is a French erotic drama film directed by David Hamilton and released in 1979. It stars James Patrick Mitchell as Paul Thomas Wyler, a sculptor who is in a creative slump. He meets Sara Moore, played by Maud Adams, an old flame who he hasn’t seen for a long time. He is also drawn to her 15-year-old daughter, Laura, played by Dawn Dunlap, who looks like Sara when they were in love. The film is set in the south of France, where Paul lives in a secluded villa. He invites Sara and Laura to stay with him for a while, hoping to rekindle his passion for art and life. He is fascinated by Laura’s beauty and innocence, and she is flattered by his attention. They develop a close bond, which soon turns into a forbidden romance. The film shows how Paul and Laura’s relationship becomes more intense and risky as they try to hide it from Sara and the outside world. They make love in secret places, such as the beach, the forest and the studio. They also share their dreams and fears, finding comfort and joy in each other’s presence. Paul feels inspired by Laura and creates a sculpture of her. The film ends with a dramatic twist, where Sara discovers Paul and Laura’s affair and confronts them. She accuses Paul of being a pedophile and threatens to call the police. She also slaps Laura and calls her a whore. Laura runs away from the house, followed by Paul. They reach a cliff, where Laura jumps into the sea, leaving Paul alone and devastated. The film closes with Paul looking at the sculpture of Laura, which is his only memory of her.
