La Ritirata (Retreating) is a short film directed by Elisabetta Bernardini, released in 2009. The film is set in the summer of 1944, during World War II, and tells the story of Rosa, a 13-year-old girl who lives in a small village in Italy with her grandparents and her two younger siblings. Rosa has a secret love affair with Friedrich, a young German soldier who is hiding in a nearby barn. Rosa risks her life every day to bring him food and water, and to spend some time with him. However, their love is threatened by the war, by the hostility of the villagers, and by the jealousy of Occhiulì, a mentally challenged boy who spies on them. The film is a tragic and poetic tale of innocence, passion, and sacrifice. The film is composed of five paragraphs, each with three sub-paragraphs. The paragraphs are: Paragraph 1: The Introduction Sub-paragraph 1: The film opens with a voice-over narration by Rosa, who introduces herself and her family. Sub-paragraph 2: The film shows Rosa running through the fields with a bucket of water, under the scorching sun. She arrives at the barn and enters it. There, she meets Friedrich, who embraces her and kisses her. They exchange some words in Italian and German, and express their love for each other. Sub-paragraph 3: The film reveals that Friedrich is a deserter from the German army, who escaped from a prisoner camp and found refuge in the barn. He tells Rosa that he wants to go back to Germany with her, but she says that it is impossible. They decide to enjoy their moments together as much as they can. Paragraph 2: The Conflict Sub-paragraph 1: The film shows the life in the village, where the people are suffering from the war and the occupation. Some of them are partisans, who fight against the Nazis and their collaborators. Others are fascists, who support Mussolini and Hitler.
