Lásky mezi kapkami deště is a Czech film directed by Karel Kachyňa, released in 1979. The film depicts the life in the Prague suburb of Žižkov in the 1930s, as a place of quirky characters, boyish gangs, poetic old shops, but also a place of oppressive impacts of unemployment. The film follows the story of a shoemaker Vincenc Bursík, who came from the countryside to fight a hopeless and desperate battle with the Baťa mass production. The film also shows the growing up and rivalry of his two sons, Kajda and Pepan, who have different personalities and attitudes towards love and life. Kajda falls in love with a charming girl Pája, whom he meets in a beautiful garden of an old villa, which belongs to a somewhat mysterious old pharmacist. However, when Kajda introduces Pája to his brother, everything changes… The film is divided into five chapters, each with three sub-chapters. The chapters are: Chapter 1: The Shoemaker and His Family Sub-chapter 1: Vincenc Bursík arrives in Žižkov with his wife and three children. He opens a small shoe shop and tries to compete with the Baťa factory. Sub-chapter 2: Kajda and Pepan join different gangs of boys and get into trouble. Kajda is more sensitive and poetic, while Pepan is more adventurous and reckless. Sub-chapter 3: Věra, the eldest daughter of Bursík, has a love affair with a married man. She gets pregnant and decides to have an abortion. Chapter 2: The Garden of Love Sub-chapter 1: Kajda meets Pája, a girl who lives in a nearby villa with her grandfather, an old pharmacist. They fall in love and spend time together in the garden. Sub-chapter 2: Pepan becomes jealous of Kajda’s relationship with Pája. He tries to seduce her and succeeds. Pája feels guilty and confused. Sub-chapter 3: Kajda finds out about Pepan’s betrayal and confronts him. They have a fight and stop talking to each other. Chapter 3: The Storm Sub-chapter 1: Vincenc Bursík faces financial difficulties and loses his customers. He decides to close his shop and move back to the countryside. Sub-chapter 2: The old pharmacist dies and leaves his villa to Pája. She decides to sell it and leave Žižkov. Sub-chapter 3: The political situation worsens and Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia. The people of Žižkov protest against the occupation. Chapter 4: The Farewell Sub-chapter 1: Vincenc Bursík and his family pack their belongings and prepare to leave. He says goodbye to his friends and neighbors. Sub-chapter 2: Kajda goes to see Pája for the last time. He asks her to come with him, but she refuses. They part with tears in their eyes. Sub-chapter 3: Pepan joins a resistance group and decides to stay in Žižkov. He apologizes to Kajda and wishes him good luck. Chapter 5: The Raindrops Sub-chapter 1: Vincenc Bursík and his family board a train that takes them away from Žižkov. They look back at their old home with nostalgia. Sub-chapter 2: Pája sells her villa and leaves Žižkov as well. She looks for Kajda at the train station, but misses him by seconds. Sub-chapter 3: Pepan stays in Žižkov and fights against the Nazis.
