Le Passé recomposé (2018) Le Passé recomposé (English: The Tale) is a 2018 American drama film written and directed by Jennifer Fox, based on her own experience of childhood sexual abuse. It stars Laura Dern, Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Ritter, Ellen Burstyn, Isabelle Nélisse, Common and Frances Conroy. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and was broadcast on HBO on May 26, 2018. In France, it was released on OCS on September 9, 2018 and on Arte on March 6, 2020. Plot Jennifer Fox (Laura Dern) is a successful documentary filmmaker and professor who lives in New York with her fiancé Martin (Common). One day, she receives a phone call from her mother Nettie (Ellen Burstyn), who has found a short story that Jennifer wrote when she was 13 years old. The story, titled “The Tale”, describes a sexual relationship that Jennifer had with two adults, Bill (Jason Ritter) and Mrs. G (Elizabeth Debicki), when she attended a horse riding camp in North Carolina. Jennifer initially dismisses the story as a fictionalized account of her teenage fantasies, but she soon begins to question her memories and realizes that she was actually abused by Bill and Mrs. G. She decides to investigate what happened that summer and to confront her abusers. She contacts her childhood friend Jenny (Isabelle Nélisse), who also attended the camp and witnessed some of the abuse. She also tracks down Iris Rose (Jessica Sarah Flaum), a former student of Mrs. G who was involved in a threesome with Bill and Mrs. G. Jennifer learns that Bill was a running coach who preyed on young girls with the help of Mrs. G, a charismatic horse riding instructor who groomed them for him. Jennifer recalls how Bill and Mrs. G manipulated her into believing that she was special and mature for her age, and how they coerced her into having sex with them. She also remembers how she suffered from physical and psychological pain, such as bleeding, vomiting and nightmares. Jennifer confronts Mrs. G, who is now an old woman living in a nursing home. Mrs. G denies any wrongdoing and claims that Jennifer was a willing participant in their relationship. She also reveals that Bill died of cancer years ago. Jennifer then visits Bill’s widow Carol (Frances Conroy), who shows her a box of letters and photos that Bill kept from his victims. Jennifer finds her own letters and photos, as well as those of Jenny and Iris Rose. Jennifer realizes that she was not the only one who was abused by Bill and Mrs. G, and that they were part of a larger network of pedophiles. She decides to expose them and to tell her story to the world. She also reconciles with Martin, who supports her throughout her ordeal.
