“Menuet” is a drama film directed by Lili Rademakers and released in 1982. It is based on the novel by Louis Paul Boon and adapted by Hugo Claus. It stars Akkemay as Eva, a young and cynical maid who works for a middle-class family. Theu Boermans plays Hubert, a factory worker who is obsessed with her. Lydia Billiet plays Hubert’s wife, who is active and idealistic but alienated from her husband. The film is set in Belgium, where Hubert works in the cold and dark cellars of a brewery. He is unhappy and lonely in his marriage and his job. He finds some comfort in collecting pictures of wild flowers and newspaper clippings, especially those about horrible murders and strange crimes. He also develops a fascination with Eva, who lives with them as their maid. The film shows how Hubert’s attraction to Eva becomes more intense and disturbing as he tries to get closer to her. He spies on her, follows her, buys her gifts and even attempts to rape her. Eva, however, is not interested in him and plays with his feelings, teasing him and rejecting him. She also has affairs with other men, including Hubert’s boss and his son. The film ends with a tragic climax, where Hubert kills Eva’s lover in a fit of jealousy and then commits suicide by hanging himself in the cellar. Eva discovers his body and calmly leaves the house, taking some of his belongings with her. The film closes with Eva walking away from the scene, showing no emotion or remorse.
