American Beauty (1999) American Beauty is a 1999 American black comedy-drama film written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Kevin Spacey as Lester Burnham, a middle-aged advertising executive who has a midlife crisis when he becomes infatuated with his teenage daughter’s best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). He also begins smoking marijuana and listening to rock music. He develops a more confident and carefree attitude, which annoys Carolyn and Jane. Carolyn, meanwhile, has an affair with Buddy Kane, a successful real estate rival whom she admires. Jane starts dating Ricky after he shows her his video collection, which includes a footage of a plastic bag dancing in the wind. Ricky tells Jane that he finds beauty in everything, even in death. She finds a gun in her closet and decides to kill Lester for ruining her life. She drives to their house while listening to Bobby Darin’s version of “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. Meanwhile, Lester sits on the couch in the living room and looks at a family photo of happier times. He smiles and says that he is grateful for every moment of his life. Frank enters the house through the back door and finds Lester in the living room. He kisses him on the lips, but Lester gently rejects him. Frank is shocked and ashamed by his own actions. He hears Carolyn’s car approaching and runs away. Carolyn enters the house with the gun and heads to the living room. She sees Lester lying on the couch with a bullet wound in his head and blood splattered on the wall behind him. She breaks down in tears. The film ends with Lester’s voice-over saying that he is not angry or sad about his death. He says that he can see his whole life as if it were one long movie.
